Dear Neighbors,
A large, healthy black bear has been repeatedly seen throughout the Rogers Park neighborhood, including Woodside East. Based on its appearance and repeated visits, it appears the bear has had access to multiple food sources, including residential trash. This is not an isolated sighting, and we all have a role in helping reduce attractants and keeping our neighborhood safe.
If You See a Bear:
- Stay calm and give the bear plenty of space.
- Never approach or feed a bear.
- Keep children close and leash all dogs. Unleashed pets can startle a bear and bring it back toward you.
- Never run from a bear. Stand your ground, speak calmly so the bear knows you are human, and slowly back away while giving it room to leave.
- If you’re walking in wooded or brushy areas, stay alert, avoid wearing earbuds, and consider carrying bear spray where it is easily accessible.
Trash Day Changes
The best way to discourage bears from returning is to remove easy food sources. Until further notice, please put your trash cans out Monday morning before 7 a.m. instead of leaving it outside overnight.
Also, please keepgarbage, pet food, bird seed, and other attractants secured. Never intentionally feed wildlife.
Reporting Bear Activity
Please do not report bear sightings to the HOA. Instead, residents are to report bear sightings and encounters directly to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
